About this treatment
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized, gentle massage technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system, the body's primary detoxification and immune network. Unlike the cardiovascular system which has the heart to pump blood, the lymphatic system relies on muscle movement and external manipulation to move lymph fluid through its vessels. MLD uses light, rhythmic strokes in specific patterns to encourage lymph flow, reduce swelling, support immune function, and promote detoxification.
The lymphatic system is responsible for removing metabolic waste, toxins, excess fluid, and cellular debris from tissues. It also transports immune cells throughout the body and filters pathogens through lymph nodes. When lymph flow becomes sluggish due to surgery, injury, inflammation, or sedentary lifestyle, fluid accumulates in tissues causing swelling, immune dysfunction, and impaired detoxification. MLD addresses this by manually stimulating lymph vessel contractions and directing fluid toward functioning lymph nodes.
MLD is remarkably gentle, using pressure lighter than 9 ounces per square inch, much softer than traditional massage. The technique follows the anatomy of lymph vessels and nodes, using specific hand movements to open pathways and encourage flow. It's particularly effective for post-surgical swelling (especially after lymph node removal), lymphedema, chronic inflammation, immune support, and aesthetic applications (reducing puffiness, promoting clear skin). The treatment is deeply relaxing and supports the body's natural cleansing processes.

Evidence & safety
Manual Lymphatic Drainage has strong research support, particularly for lymphedema management where it's considered standard of care. Studies show measurable reductions in swelling and improvements in quality of life. When performed by certified MLD therapists, it's extremely safe and gentle. Contraindications include active infections, blood clots, and certain heart conditions. Overall, one of the gentlest and safest bodywork modalities with significant therapeutic applications.
